I have always been interested in the stories of mountain men and the Native American culture of the fur trade era. These courageous, free spirits blazed the trails westward and to new discoveries of the North American continent for the east coast inhabitants. I had intended to paint this piece with a scenic background but decided it was more effective and accentuated the ruggedness of the character with just a mottled grey background.
