For Indigenous cultures of the Great Plains, winter was often a time of hunger because the large bison herds had migrated south. In this painting the hunter is facing a cold night around a small campfire. Even though he is fearless, the spirit of the wolf fills his thoughts with their haunting calls. He is prepared to be the hunter or to be the defender at a moments notice.
