This painting was inspired by the beautiful smile on this girl's face. Like many girls and women of the third world, they are required to make long and sometimes arduous trips, twice daily just to get drinking water. Mean water bottling companies have bought the surrounding land and now drain the water from the water table and then sell it back to the people while paying next to nothing for the water in the ground. Yet this young girl can still manage a smile. In this instance, it is the sight of a rainbow-coloured sunbird. I gave her a sari, filled with rainbow colours to relate the connection to the sunbird. Thus they both become sunbirds shining the light that they are out to the world.
